Allan's Organ

You may recall the organ I wrote about last week that we saw at the Macedonia in Lancefield and Allan was quite smitten by. Well the days passed and I was wondering if he was still thinking about it and considering buying it. I tried to give him a gentle prompt by the following Wednesday. Remember I didn’t want to be too pushy, and he hadn’t discussed the topic on the Saturday whilst he had been installing my garden lights. Anyway he sent me a depressingly negative email about how the piano stool we’d seen didn’t come as a package with the organ and would have to be bought separately, how the cost to ship it down to Melbourne was looking exorbitant, how he was worried that it might be too heavy for his floorboards, how his dog had died and his woman had done left him with four hungry children and a crop in the fields….

So I thought, OK; time and distance have cooled him off. So after a bit of email to-ing and fro-ing I suggested that we might take a trip up to Lancefield the following (last) Saturday and pay it a visit, just in case seeing it again might tweak his heartstrings. And he told me there was no need to visit it as it already had a sold sticker on it. With his name on it! Ratbag!!!

St. Patrick's @ the Macedonia

Went up to Lancefield for St Patricks Night on Friday. A friend has taken over management of the old Macedonia Hotel which is now a wine bar/gallery/antiques place/café. It was a great place. Everything was spread over four floors and there was a traditional balcony around two sides of the second story where you could sit out and enjoy fabulous views (until the sun went down of course). I bought a 1940/50s Diana Pottery vase because I needed a souvenir. Allan fell a bit in love with an organ (the kind you play) and I’m keen (without being too pushy) for him to buy it. It’ll look really groovy and he’ll enjoy playing it and restoring the bits that will inevitably need restoring.
The event was an official ‘opening’ party for the new management of the establishment. We were greeted with a complementary glass of champagne and lots and lots of yummy finger food throughout the night. It was a great vibe and I hope they do really well there. I’ll be going back to enjoy a browse and afternoon tea in the not too distant future.

Chocolate

Last Saturday Jessica booked us on a Chocolate Walk around Melbourne CBD. Our group (Elaine, Jessica, Jamie, Seona, Phil and myself) and half a dozen other souls were led on a choc-ucational stroll around some fine chocolate establishments, learning a little about the history of the chocolate making families and, of course, sampling the very fine wares. The guide was a fun person who had been doing this for twenty years, so she really knew her stuff. And one of the highlight places we stopped at was Koko Black, in the Royal Arcade. We sampled to-die-for Belgian truffles and had a look around the place. This establishment is just around the corner from where I work, and I had always thought it was ‘just’ a chocolate shop. But it’s also a chocolate lounge where you can enjoy a range of totally decadent chocolate dishes and drinks (both alcoholic and non). A taste sensation and a special place to go for a leisurely afternoon tea. My favourite place on the tour. Seona and Phil went back to try it on Sunday and voted it a hit.

'Puter Heaven

Well this week I have my brand new super powered, GT striped, turbo charged, eco friendly computer up and running. Thatch came around in the afternoon last Thursday and set it up for me. It’s glorious, I keep sitting and waiting for things to happen and then realise that they already have! And the added bonus is that I can now watch (and indeed, burn) DVDs. It can even do two things at once (and I don’t count playing Solitaire as one thing); I’d forgotten what that was like. Thatch was a bit surprised when he saw the size of my My Documents folder. I have an extensive collection of digital scrapbooking elements which are all in .PNG and .PSD files which are very resource intensive. Had a few glitches getting my email program sorted, but that’s now fixed and at least I have the webmail version to fall back on (Seona reminded me of that one). So it’s full steam ahead for massive productivity. Except the new machine comes with a game called Spider Solitaire. It’s like Solitaire meets Freecell. I’m doomed!!!

28th Annual Festival of the Sun

The 28th Annual Festival of the Sun was held yesterday. This amazing party has been running every year for the last 28 years, held at Rob and Doreen’s place. This year there were three bands playing, including the ever-popular Jack Rabbit & the Pubic Hares.
Jack even had some new songs to present, although it would probably have been a good idea if all the band members had been present at rehearsals.
This year’s invitation was an incredible Sgt. Pepper-esque collage of Festival goers, past and present, put together by Rob, who ran a competition to guess the names of all the people. Unfortunately most people were daunted by all of the retro photos, some couldn’t even recognise themselves (yes Allan, this means you) and only a few brave souls actually took up the challenge. Unlike previous years, no one jumped into the pool for the traditional games of water polo. I suggested that maybe Festival goers were turning into grown-ups, but this was hotly denied by all parties and a number of other excuses were hastily dragged out.

Rob and Doreen have such a great place. Including a Pavilion overlooking the swimming pool (just because) and a fantastic model railway which winds its way through the undergrowth around the garden. We always get a visit from some of the wildlife in the area, usually possums. But this year this Kookaburra sat in judgement on the event.

As has been our custom for several years I was designated driver and picked up Thatch and Jools in my little red taxi. Phil and Seona didn’t attend this year as the logistics of coming down from Sydney for this weekend didn’t pan out. Allan has now joined our little group so we still had a full car. I brought along the dip and nibblies and the wine and the Thatchers, as always provided the deliciously pretentious meal -- barbequed lamb wraps with garlic sauce and salad and Crème Brule for desert. Complete with the blowtorch to create the toffee crust!! Yummm.

Craft and Kangas

Went over to Elaine’s yesterday (Australia Day) for a craft day. Just her and me. It was good; nice and relaxing, although I would have liked to accomplish more than we did.

I brought a truck load of supplies and stuff with me as I wasn’t sure what we’d be doing and what she might need (naturally we didn’t need 90% of it). Elaine wanted to make hand made thank you cards for the guests at her 50th birthday lunch (we’ve become tragic crafties. Country music next?). Now we could have done it simply and quickly with a bit of a collage of papers and a plain tag with Thank You stuck on the front but we tried to get clever (always a worry) and decided to design the tags to incorporate the photos we’d taken on the day. So by the time we’d downloaded and installed a trial version of Paintshop X (which I’m not familiar with so a bit of a learning curve needed), then trawled the internet for tag designs that we liked, then fiddled about with the photos and incorporated them into the tags, we’d frittered away half the day. Anyway we finally managed to get our act together and had a major surge of productivity in the late afternoon and finished the cards. Elaine was pleased with the result and, although I didn't get to do any of my project, it was still a very satisfying day.

After we'd finished and had dinner we went out on the deck. The kangaroos were grazing right up close to the house. I'm still amazed at the sight of these mobs every time I go up there and how fearless they are in coming so close to the houses. A wonderful sight!

A fleet of majestic hot air balloons

I went for my usual dawn walk in All Nations Park at the end of my street this morning and was fortunate enough to see a magnificent sight. Just as I rounded the corner I saw a fleet of six hot air balloons sailing in a perfect crescent formation over the top of the Mound (a man-made rocky hill with a walking track in the centre of the park). The sky was all shades of pink and washed out blue with the clouds looking thin and stretched as they do in that early morning light. It looked really spectacular to see these balloons in perfect formation cresting the Mound. Tragically a camera is baggage I can’t afford on my power walk so I didn't get a photo. But maybe that’s just as well. Neither my camera nor my photography skills could come close to capturing that awesome sight.

Elaine's 50th Birthday

Last Sunday (15/1/06) was Elaine's 50th Birthday. It started out as a quiet little lunch at Hogans with just Greg and the kids (I was planning to crash it), but by the time Sunday came it had grown to 40 people and we'd pretty much taken over the pub. The food was sensational, there was a funcky little 3 piece combo playing, and everyone had a sensational time, especially Elaine. Greg asked me to 'say a few words' at cake cutting time. Here they are:

"It’s hard to believe I’m standing here at Elaine’s 50th Birthday. It seems such a short while ago that she was my little sister, squabbling over who had dibs on the green chair.

When we were growing up Elaine was the dreamer and I was the sensible one. Somehow that meant that I got to be the one who had to look after the boys when they were little and run errands to the shop. Hmm, maybe Elaine was actually the sensible one after all.

It was dreaming that brought about her first brush with the law one September day in London, back in 1967.

We had just returned from three years living in Cyprus and our relos realised that we needed retail rehabilitation so they took us shopping in London's West End.

We had been shopping for boring adult stuff all day and we were all set to go to Hamley’s (the biggest toy shop in the known world). So as Elaine checked out the window of the department store we had just come out of, 11 of us piled very noisily into a London Cab.

We were very proud of this achievement and did a head count twice on the trip to Regent St. Unfortunately never realising that the number should have been 12 not 11. When we got there and everyone was rounded up, we discovered that we were minus Elaine. We finally worked out that she hadn’t been in the taxi and the guys went back to where we had come from to look for her. Meanwhile the women got down to some serious worrying in front of the toy shop. I must admit, I thought they would have been better off worrying inside the shop but I was in a minority.

Meanwhile Elaine had come back to earth, turned around and discovered she was all alone in the big bad city. This was pretty scary for a kid who had no city experience, had just spent the last three years in a country that was vastly different to London and who was not the sensible one.

Anyway, after an initial panic, Elaine took herself down the street until she found a policeman on point duty. She accosted him and told him that her family was lost and she needed help. She was taken to the local police station, where she spent the next hour and a half bonding with the constabulary and eating lollies.

Dad and the uncles finally found her there and returned her to Hamleys, where not only was she welcomed as the prodigal daughter, but because of her sensible action she became the heroine of the day. And a toy shop is so the right place to be when you’re a heroine.

Well a lot of water has flowed under the bridge since then.
Whilst still dreaming her dreams, there’s no question that Elaine has her feet firmly on the ground.
She’s the person you think of when you want to talk over your troubles.
She’s the person you turn to when you need moral support.
She’s the person you know is always there for you when you need her.
She’s one of the most caring and giving people I know.

As kids we squabbled all the time.
As adults, Elaine you are my bestest of friends and the best sister anyone could wish for.
Thank you for being the person that you are.
And with everyone here, I’d like to congratulate you on your 50th birthday and wish you many years of fun, joy and happiness.”

I got a bit choked as I reached the end and Elaine got a bit teary and it was all lovely.

When I was a kid I would be given a diary for Christmas and almost all the days would read "Nothing much happened today" because I never wrote about my feelings or what I was thinking. So what am I doing with a Blog?

I guess my only explanation is that in the last year I've gotten into scrapbooking and even more recently into digi-scrapping. Journalling is very difficult for me because I'm not accustomed to writing down emotive thoughts. Maybe this will help me break through that block.

Besides...it's the trendy thing to do. Right?
